INDIA, Post-Mauryan (Malwa). Ujjain. 1st century BC. AE (Bronze, 17x12 mm, 4.72 g). Goddess Lakshmi seated facing, flanked by two elephants standing on platforms and anointing her with water (Abhisheka-Lakshmi); below, river with fish. Rev. Four-orbed Ujjain symbol. Pieper 305. Rare. Struck on a somewhat short flan as usual and with a few light cleaning scratches, otherwise, very fine.

Abhisheka Lakshmi is flanked here by two elephants anointing her with water while she stands on a blooming and flourishing lotus flower. This depiction symbolizes the wealth and prosperity that Lakshmi will bring to her devotees in return for their prayers.
